Hanhwa Aerospace, the only aviation engine company in Korea, supplies the engine for the KF-21 Boramae, Korea's first domestic fighter produced in collaboration with Indonesia.
The company has signed a contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration to supply mass-produced engines worth 556.2 billion won. The contract period is from June 2024 to December 2027, and Hanwha Aerospace will deliver about 40 F414 engines and spare modules to be installed in the full production run of the KF-21, and will also provide follow-up military support such as engine maintenance instructors and on-site technical support.
Hanwha Aerospace has produced more than 10,000 engines over 45 years, securing technical capabilities and building an industrial ecosystem that will eventully allow advanced aviation engines to be developed with Korea's own technology.
Hanwha Aerospace has supplied engines for the Korean military's fighters, including KF-5, KF-16, F-15K and T-50, starting with the F-4 fighter in 1979, by overseas licensed production methods. The F414 engine installed in the KF-21 is also being produced at Changwon Plant 1 under license from GE Aerospace, a global aviation engine company.
An official from Hanwha Aerospace says, "With a sense of responsibility and mission as the only aviation engine company in Korea, we will supply perfect quality engines without stumble and mobilize our capabilities to develop our own aviation engines to secure self-defense and Korea's future."
