Pratt & Whitney’s GTF Advantage engine has received FAA type certification for the Airbus A320neo family, marking the latest milestone for the GTF engine series. The engine provides 4-8% more takeoff thrust, supporting higher payloads, extended range and new route opportunities for operators, particularly with the A321XLR.
“GTF engines already offer the lowest fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for single-aisle aircraft,” says Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney. “The GTF Advantage extends that lead and enhances aircraft capability, providing more thrust and even more value to operators.”
The engine incorporates redesigned life-limited parts, increased core airflow to reduce operating temperatures and advanced coatings in the high-pressure turbine. It also underwent more than twice the endurance testing of the current GTF model, benefiting from over 100,000 hours of engine and rig testing across all GTF programmes.
Fully interchangeable with the existing GTF model, GTF Advantage will become the production standard. Pratt & Whitney is ensuring compatibility with 100% sustainable aviation fuel to support future industry requirements.
More than 2,200 GTF-powered aircraft have been delivered to over 80 customers, with engines saving over 2 billion gallons of fuel and avoiding 20 million metric tons of CO2 emissions since entry into service. With strong demand, total GTF engine orders and commitments now exceed 11,000 units.
