Airbus Helicopters has introduced its H140 at the VERTICON event in Dallas, Texas. The 3-tonne light twin-engine rotorcraft is designed for emergency medical services, passenger transport and business aviation, complementing the existing H135. It features a larger cabin, enhanced accessibility and a T-shaped tail boom with an optimised Fenestron to reduce noise.
Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, says: “Introducing a new helicopter to the light twin-engine segment is a testimony to our commitment to meeting our customers' evolving mission requirements, leveraging our R&T programmes such as Bluecopter.”
Safran Helicopter Engines has been selected to power the H140 with its Arrius 2E, which delivers 700 shp and incorporates technology from the Arriel 2E and Arrano 1A engines. The engine’s hot section has been redesigned for a 10% power increase over previous Arrius models. It is managed by a dual-channel FADEC system, enhancing reliability, with additive-manufactured components reducing weight.
Cédric Goubet, President of Safran Helicopter Engines, says: “The Arrius 2E maintains high commonality with other Arrius 2 models, while incorporating new technologies that maximise performance and ease of use. By selecting Safran Arrius engines, Airbus is choosing the best propulsion solution available for this type of helicopter and a world-class support network.”
The H140 also features the five-bladed rotor system introduced on the H145 in 2019, offering simplified maintenance and enhanced comfort. Operators will benefit from an optimised maintenance plan that aligns airframe and engine servicing schedules. The helicopter will include Airbus’ Helionix avionics suite with a 4-axis autopilot to improve situational awareness and reduce pilot workload.
Four dedicated prototypes will support development, with the first aircraft already undergoing flight tests at Airbus’ Donauwörth facility.
