Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation has announced that it has been selected by Embraer Defense and Security to supply the on-board inert gas generation system for the KC-390 military transport aircraft. The contract value has not been disclosed.
Eaton's experience on many of the world's most advanced civilian and military aircraft platforms will be instrumental in helping Embraer achieve the latest regulatory certification requirements for the KC-390, including FAA inerting system certification. Last year Eaton successfully completed the industry's first multi-tank inerting gas distribution system certification process for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
This is the second contract awarded to Eaton on the KC-390 platform. In a separate agreement announced in 2011, Eaton will design, develop and supply airframe fuel system components for the KC-390 and provide production units and aftermarket support throughout the life of the program.
"Eaton's dual expertise in designing aircraft fuel and vent systems and certifying fuel-inerting systems was key in our selection for the KC-390 contract," said Frank Dubey, vice president and general manager of Eaton's fuel systems division. "Eaton's innovation in fuel and inerting systems and our focus on expanding into emerging markets are driving global business growth. We're excited about this opportunity to increase our content on the KC-390 platform and extend our world-class technologies to Embraer."
The on-board inert gas generation system enhances aircraft safety by injecting inert gas into fuel tanks to significantly reduce the potential for ignition sources. Within the Embraer agreements, Eaton will provide fuel system support during the KC-390 development and test phase, which is expected to be complete by 2015, and perform full system qualification and certification for the integrated fuel-inerting system.
