Amalgamated Vision wins back-to-back SBIR awards
Tuesday, 6 June 2023

Amalgamated Vision LLC, a leading innovator in advanced optical engineering and design for wearable portable display, announces it has been selected by both AFWERX and NASA for SBIR Phase I contracts. Both awards focus on the development of a unique laser beam scanning (LBS) pancake lens optical engine for augmented reality (AR) and smartglasses applications, and its potential to fill critical technical capability gaps in the United States Department of Air Force (DAF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

These highly competitive contracts recognize the company's transformative work in developing advanced virtual retinal display (VRD) optics for head-mounted display (HMD). AV's patented engineering solutions eliminate the problems inherent in traditional optics used in AR devices by changing the way visual information is presented and perceived in multiple work environments.

Virtual retinal display technology holds immense potential for enhancing user experiences in fields such as defense, aviation, training, entertainment, and healthcare. By projecting images directly onto the user's retina, this innovative approach eliminates the need for traditional waveguide or combiner displays and offers significant advantages in terms of size, weight, and image quality. It enables new HMD form factors that do not obstruct the user's field of view, and displays complex, high-resolution information while maintaining complete situational awareness.

"We are honored to have been selected for both the AFWERX and NASA Phase I SBIR awards," said Adam Davis, CEO of Amalgamated Vision. "This recognition further validates the innovation and value we bring to the field as we continue to push the boundaries of optical technology for wearable display. We are confident that our intellectual property and engineering expertise will unlock the potential of spatial computing to increase the efficacy and efficiency of our military personnel both at home and abroad, as well as our astronauts needing to perform autonomous medical procedures during long-duration missions."

As part of these Phase I projects, Amalgamated Vision will conduct comprehensive feasibility studies and design exploration to refine its optical engine for end user needs. The company will collaborate with USAF and NASA experts in the field to ensure the development of mission-specific solutions that meet stringent end-user requirements.

By successfully advancing through the SBIR program, Amalgamated Vision aims to position itself for further growth opportunities in the defense and commercial sectors.
