Hartzell Propeller has developed the Kestrel, a lightweight carbon fibre constant-speed propeller for Rotax 916-powered aircraft. It is the first model in the Falcon composite series and has ASTM approval, with FAA certification expected later this year.
“The Kestrel marks the first next-generation propeller for Rotax 916 engines, combining lightweight composite design with high-performance aerodynamics,” says Hartzell Propeller president JJ Frigge. “It is tailored for the excellent backcountry and cross-country flying capabilities of the STOL Carbon Cub UL,” he adds.
The Carbon Cub UL from CubCrafters is the first aircraft to feature the Kestrel, which is available through CubCrafters’ builder-assist programme or directly from Hartzell for Rotax 916-equipped aircraft. It is expected to be a strong alternative to fixed or ground-adjustable propellers, providing what Hartzell calls a superior value proposition.
“Hartzell’s Kestrel propeller is a game-changer for the Carbon Cub UL,” says CubCrafters president and CEO Pat Horgan. “It delivers better handling, improved takeoff and climb performance and a 3-4 knot cruise speed increase compared to other propellers—all while keeping a lightweight design. Plus, it looks fantastic on the aircraft,” he adds.
Developed with Rotax and CubCrafters, the Kestrel is the lightest constant-speed propeller available for Rotax 916 engines at 19.6 pounds, 10 pounds lighter than other models. Its three-blade, 76-inch design enhances aerodynamic efficiency without unnecessary weight.
