Hamilton Sundstrand Corporation has been chosen by Embraer Defense and Security to supply the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) for the new Embraer KC-390 transport aircraft. Hamilton Sundstrand is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
The Embraer KC-390 is a twin engine, medium-lift military transport aircraft, which Embraer Defense and Security is developing with the Brazilian Air Force. The aircraft is slated to enter service in 2016, with capability to transport up to 23 tons of cargo, including wheeled armored vehicles, support equipment and military personnel. The cargo aircraft is also designed for rapid configuration as a tanker.
The Embraer KC-390 APU, which will be supplied by Hamilton Sundstrand's Power Systems business, is a unit derived from a successful commercial APU and specifically tailored for military applications. The program is projected to have a value of approximately $300 million.
"Hamilton Sundstrand is proud to continue its partnership with Embraer as the primary APU supplier and to provide equipment for this modern military aircraft to Embraer Defense and Security and, ultimately, the Brazilian Air Force," said Eileen Drake, vice president and general manager, Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems. "The selection of this state-of-the-art military auxiliary power unit for the KC-390 follows closely on our award as Embraer's Supplier of the Year for mechanical systems, based on our technical capability and cost effectiveness."
"This renewed partnership with Hamilton Sundstrand will bring to the KC-390 a solid and dependable APU solution that will help us make the Embraer KC-390 a best-in-class military airlifter and tanker jet," said Eduardo Bonini Santos Pinto, senior vice president, Operations and COO, Embraer Defense and Security.
